Custom Tools

A custom tool is a normal EcoItem with the vanilla tool component that controls mining: you set its mining speed, durability cost, and per-block rules. This page covers adding that tool behaviour on top of a standard item.

Quick start

  1. Open the /plugins/EcoItems/items/ folder.

  2. Copy _example_tool.yml and rename it to your tool's ID, e.g. hardened_netherite_pickaxe.yml.

  3. Set up the item: section as you would for any item (see How to Make an Item).

  4. Add the minecraft:tool component with the mining speed and any block rules.

  5. Run /ecoitems reload.

  6. Give yourself the item with /ecoitems give <you> hardened_netherite_pickaxe and mine a block to confirm the speed and drops behave as set.

Naming and IDs

Tools live in the same items/ folder as every other EcoItem, so the file name without .yml is the item's ID, used in commands and in the Item Lookup System.

Item

The item: section is exactly the same as any other EcoItem. See How to Make an Item for the full breakdown of the base item, display, and recipe fields. A tool is still a full EcoItem, so the top-level effects: and conditions: work too, e.g. running an effect on a mine_block trigger alongside the mining rules.

The component

minecraft:tool is the vanilla component that controls mining, the same one vanilla tools use, with every field documented in the Data component format. Block lists accept block IDs or block tags; tags start with # and use vanilla tag names like #minecraft:mineable/pickaxe.
